In my online wanderings I have come across a lot of patterns. Patterns that never really stuck with me, I printed them out, thought about them, and decided “nahhhh, not now.” This is the direction that the star blankie has gone. Sad to say, but I decided to do some basic work and make an afghan. It is my first big project and having only learned what a double crochet is and how to make a granny square I was a little intimidated when I had the bright idea of making an afghan for myself.

But low and behold after 1 botched (and by botched I mean slightly skewed,) round “pinwheel” I figured out what the pattern was not making clear to me.

That is the thing with patterns. They make sense to some people. Then there are the little picture diagrams with all the circles and crosses and x’s and strange little stick pins at odd angles that are supposed to be double crochet shells. They don’t make anymore sense to me then having it written out in crochetese.

So I sit down and write it out long hand, my crochet and knitting for dummies cracked open so I can decipher the hidden meanings between sc 3rd st etc . Sure, now it makes sense, but when I first look at it I feel like I have been struck with temporary dyslexia!  And so to get rid of my lack of confidence I literally write it out, page after page in my crochet journal to be flipped to when I get to teach someone else how to crochet. One day I will, I just know it!

I am now 5 pinwheels in and I have to say I love the pattern now that I have it worked out.

pictures to come at a later date, but right now they look fantastic!
